Extra Information on CR ??

Students are frequently advised by guide books/instructors not to use any extra information (i.e. information not mentioned in the argument) to answer CR questions.

While this rule does apply to SOME question types it does not apply to ALL. For example, on 'Strengthen' questions the correct option will invariably contain some extra information that is not mentioned in the original argument.

So when to use extra information and when to not?

You can use the following as a rough guideline:

Do NOT use extra information on:

  • Assumption questions
  • Inference Questions
  • Flaw Questions
  • Bolded statement Questions

You can USE extra information on:

  • Strengthen/Weaken Questions
  • Explain Questions
